Treating Nose Disorders
The Goal of Nose Disorder Treatment
  • Alleviate nasal symptoms
  • Correct any underlying inflammation or structural abnormality
  • Restore optimal breathing and sense of smell
Given the complexity and diversity of nose disorders, the line of treatment may vary too – which can range from conservative methods to surgical interventions.
Conservative Treatments
Lifestyle Modifications
This involves practicing good nasal hygiene (e.g. use of nasal rinses and humidifiers), and avoiding irritants and allergens (e.g. pollen, dust mites) to reduce risk of infection and ensure optimal nasal function.
Medications
Corticosteroids, antihistamines, decongestants, antibiotics, be it in the form of a nasal spray or rinse, oral medication or injection may be prescribed to treat symptoms of allergies, infections and inflammations.
Nasal Packing
Through the use of haemostatic gauze or sponge into the nasal cavity, pressure will be applied to control bleeding in the nose.
Allergy Immunotherapy
Aimed at building tolerance towards particular allergens and controlling allergic symptoms, this involves constant exposure to specific allergens in the form of an injection or oral medication.
Radiation Therapy or Chemotherapy
Usually reserved for cases of nasopharyngeal cancer, cancer cells are destroyed using targeted X-ray beams and chemical drugs. When used in combination, this increases the effectiveness of radiation therapy.
WHILE CONSERVATIVE TREATMENTS ARE OFTEN THE FIRST LINE OF MANAGEMENT TO HELP RELIEVE SYMPTOMS, FURTHER INTERVENTIONS MAY BE NEEDED FOR RECURRENT OR SEVERE NASAL CONDITIONS.

Surgical Methods
Image-guided Surgery (IGS)

Akin to a GPS system, this involves the use of real-time data from CT or MRI scans to create 3D images of the sinuses and surrounding structures of the nose.

The IGS can be used with or without endoscopic sinus surgery. With the detailed 3D image, it offers greater visibility of the surgical site, which greatly enhances precision and accuracy of the surgery, improving patient safety and surgical outcomes.

Septoplasty
With the nasal septum bent or crooked, nasal obstruction can occur and restrict airflow. A septoplasty can remove or realign the deviated portions of the nasal bone and cartilage to eliminate blockage and improve nasal function, without affecting the appearance of the nose.
Endoscopic Cautery
This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses diagnostic nasal endoscopy and an electrocautery device to seal off the targeted blood vessel causing the bleeding.
Turbinate Reduction Surgery
This is used to correct breathing issues in cases of nasal obstruction associated with swollen turbinates. It involves either the use of radiofrequency energy or removal of part or all of the inferior turbinate to reduce its size and improve nasal airflow.
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS)

With reduced pain, faster recovery, minimal scarring and postoperative complications, ESS is a minimally invasive procedure using a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light attached (endoscope) to treat various nose conditions.

ESS is often used to treat structural abnormalities that results in sinus problems (eg. a deviated septum, enlarged nasal turbinates or structurally narrow sinus openings). Removal of nasal polyps and tumors, or treatment of nasal neuralgia can also be done through this procedure.
